What three Germanic tribes contributed to the formation of the English language?
The English Language was not actually influenced so much by the
three Germanic tribes. Yes the Anglos, Saxons, and Jutes came to
England after the Romans fled, but it was not really infuenced by
the Anglo and Jute language. The base of the English language was
created from Saxon. Vikings from mainly Norway and Denmark who came
to Britain influenced the English language further, by adding Old
Norse words, which you can still see today. For example, the word
'by' means village, and there are places in England called Whitby,
'whitvillage', and in lowlands Scots dialect, they call children
'barn' which comes from the Norwegian/Danish/Swedish word 'barn'
which means children.
After that the Vikings who settled in Normandy in the north of
Frace, eventually adopted French as their Language, replacing
Danish. And in 1066, when they conquered England, they brought over
30,000 French words into the English Language.
These are what contributed to the formation of the English
Language.
