Galileo was allowed to teach that the Earth goes round the Sun but only as a theory, because to say that the Earth actually is at the centre requires re-interpretation of the scriptures, which Galileo was not sufficiently knowledgeable to do, in the opinion of the Church.
However Galileo persisted in promoting his views and eventually brought out a book describing his ideas, in which the Pope was portrayed as a simpleton. He was put on trial for heresy and eventually recanted. During Galileo's lifetime there was no proof of which theory was right.
But within 100 years of his death, new scientific discoveries were made that forced people to understand that the Earth actually does orbit round the Sun.
