Serial digital interface [SDI] standard is based on a 270 Mbps transfer rate, over a single 75 ohm coaxial cable [BNC connector], up to 600 feet. Serial Digital Interface is a [standard definition] digital Broadcast Television standard providing a lossless digital encoding of standard NTSC and PAL formats [with embedded audio]. SDI is used in Television stations, cable channels, and professional production Equipment. SDI is described in ITU R BT 601 standard for interface of component digital video. SDI is defined in SMPTE259M and ITU-R BT.656 standards. SMPTE259M defines four standard bit rates from 143Mbps to 360Mbps [ 270Mps is common]. SMPTE 344M adds a 540Mbps bit rate. One component of luminance (with 720 samples per line), and two of color (each with 360 samples per line). There are either 10 or 8 bits per sample [scrambled, polarity independent interface, with common scrambling for both component ITU-R 601 and composite digital video and four channels of (embedded) digital audio]. The SDI bitstream is encoded using a pseudo-random scramble followed by a a NRZ-to NRZI conversion. The scramble code is x9+ x4+1. The original 8-bit SDI format was based on CCIR-601, the new 10-bit version is called SDTI [Serial Digital Transport Interface.

You might like to take a look at the Tektronix website which has some brief descriptions of analog, SD SDI and HD SDI signals. Their tutorials are based on the use of their own signal monitors of course, but the Harris will have similar functions and of course, the content of the SDI signals is independent of the analyzer. It's probably worth deciding on what information you are trying to gather as it can take a long long time to master all the detail of SDI signals and their relevance to your needs. Typical SDI signals will have auxiliary data imbedded such as audio, closed caption, test lines, idents etc. If you only need to check signal quality with eye patterns, for example, the aux data will only serve to bog you down.


How audio and video signals travel in one cable?

There are several ways to carry audio and video signals in a single cable. Since the first days of television broadcasting, both signals were transmitted at RF frequencies with the audio signal at a small fixed frequency offset from the video signal. From the antenna, the signals are carried on a co-ax cable to the television. Later on, video recorders output their signals in the same format, providing a single RF co-ax cable to link the recorder to the television. Video recorders also had separate video and audio connectors that allowed the signals to be delivered to the monitor without the need to encode them to RF frequencies. Since the introduction of digital signals for television, studios used SDI - a digital signal carried on co-ax cable that allows audio and other data to be carried with the video signal. Video images are made of hundreds of lines that build up to create a full screen image. 50 or 60 times each second, the lines are drawn from the top of the screen and work their way to the bottom. At the end of each line there is a gap of a few microseconds that provide the space for a timing pulse and a further period in which no image is transmitted. This gap is large enough to carry audio data. When the signal is received, the video data is delivered in the time frame in which it is displayed. The audio on the other hand is delivered in small packets of data. As the packets are received, they are stored and then converted to a real time audio stream before being converted to an analog signal or processed for onward delivery. SDI uses the single cable to carry other data. Closed captioning (Teletext in Europe) is carried along with time codes, test signals and other program identifying data in a similar way. SDI is an uncompressed format meaning that every pixel of the image is sent in real time. Many signals are compressed for storage and transmission, mostly using MPEG encoding. This is different to SDI in that the data stream does not carry every pixel of data. It manages to reduce the data rate by 10 or even 20 times but the resulting signal then has to be decoded by the receiving device.
