This means that the switch is going bad. You will need to replace the switch that is on your steering wheel or on the turn signal switch.
You likely have a CV joint wearing out in your front wheel drive.

IF the system is working correctly, just put the gearshift in Neutral. Press hard on the brake, and turn the switch to 4H or 2WD. The Ranger and most other 4WD's will shift on the fly (in Drive) to 4H (4-wheel High), but require the gearshift to be in Neutral in order to shift out of 4L (4-wheel Low).
If its a front wheel drive car , you automatically push the accelerator but not to hard and turn into it not with it. A 4 wheel drive car you turn into it and press the accelerator and finally rear wheel drive you let go of the accelerator and turn into it
you can engage the 4 wheel drive with the vehicle in neutral, then make sure you lock the hubs manually on the wheels. turn the dial on the hub caps of the front wheels to lock, when not in 4 wheel the wheels need to be in free mode.
