No. Every airplane is given an official name and most of them have an unofficial name. The official name of the F-15 is Eagle. Follow-on variations of the F-15 have been named Strike Eagle and Streak Eagle.

During development, an aircraft program will have a name. Each contractor who competes for the contract will submit their proposal and they will have a name or model number to identify their product. The US Air Force issued a requirement for what was called Fighter Experimental (F-X), that eventually lead to the F-15. Four companies submitted proposals for the contract.
