A big controversy in curling right now is the use of "directional fabric" on brooms. In the past few years, a couple of broom manufacturers have found that a certain type of fabric allows you to not only make a rock go a little farther and curl a little less, as has always been the case in curling, but potentially slow the rock down or make it curl more or curl the wrong way, depending on the exact sweeping motion. This could make the success of each shot much less dependent on the skill of the shooter. Most curlers and fans think this is a terrible idea, so the curling community is scrambling to try to create technical rules about exactly what types of brooms are OK and what types aren't, when this is something that has never really been an issue until now.

It is very unlikely that a curling iron would damage a person's hair due to fungus. Curling irons get extremely hot, and the heat would kill any lingering bacteria on the barrel.
