A hedgehog is both an easy and a hard pet to keep. They can seem like easy pets to take care of if you ignore their cage and don't clean it, they aren't like a dog, so they won't bother you about it. But it is important you keep their cage clean, give them fresh food that is nutritious, give them a wheel in their cage (see Viki's hedgehogs) and play with them.

They will be a bit prickly at first, but they will become friendly quickly as long as you spend time with them when they are little.

Make sure you check for broken teeth, and don't let their nails grow too long, if you do decide to cut them yourself, make sure you are overly cautious about not hitting the quick. A hedgehog can loose blood quickly, which can be dangerous and if not treated properly, it can cause infection, especially with a dirty cage. Also keep an eye out to see that the skin under their quills does not become dry, when you give your hedgehog a bath, make sure you wash off all of the soap so they don't get irritated skin, and keep them warm and dry- especially their ears. Johnson's No Tear Baby shampoo is a good soap for hedgehogs.

A hedgehog is a difficult animal to keep, but if you take care of your hedgehog well and give your hedgehog plenty of attention, they are really great pets to have.
