How did "father" get shortened to "dad"?

Updated: 9/27/2023

I understand that "pa" came from the the Latin "pater", but where did "dad" come from? It doesn't make any sense in Latin or in English. Is it from another language entirely?

Father' comes from the Proto-Indo-European “pəter” and Old English 'fæder,' meaning “he who begets a child,” reflecting the baby-talk sound “pa” as well as a phonetic shift from 'p' to 'f' in Middle English. However, 'dad' did not evolve from 'father. ' “It's from 'dada,'” says Professor John H.

What did a roman father do with a newborn baby?

A Roman father had to acknowledge the child as his own. There is a rumor that the newborn would be laid at the father's feet and if the dad picked it up he considered it his child. This may be just myth or "Hollywood History". No ancient writer mentions this action, but to be fair, the ancient writers were not overly concerned with domestic life. The father also had the option of rejecting the child by saying "it is not to be fed". Augustus did this with his great-grandchild. If the father rejected the baby, it was either starved to death or exposed, or given away to someone who wanted it.
