A PBX (Private Branch eXchange) is a phone system switch that can connect many internal telephone lines to a few external PS TN lines. With a PBX all of the in house phones connect using designated extension, usually just a few digits - it can also connect any extension with an outside line and any outside caller can make a direct call to any extension using a set prefix followed by the extension number. This function and other capabilities like answering service, call transferring and collecting of call statistics is handled by integrated software.
