Jim's owner, Miss Watson, agreed to sell him South, which meant having a much harder life, since the further South you went, the more shipping had to be paid to send the cotton North. At one point in the book, Huck comes close to betraying Jim, but can't bring himself to do it. All he has been taught all his life is that black people are inferior, no more than mules with hands, and that the lowest sort of scum are the ones who help slaves escape. But Huck has been around Jim, and knows that he is a man, and a fine one at that. When push comes to shove, Huck does the *truly* moral thing and saves Jim, rather than what he was *taught* was moral.

Jim was betrayed in "Huckleberry Finn" when he discovered that Huck had revealed his location to Tom Sawyer's Aunt Sally. This betrayal resulted in Jim being captured and re-enslaved, undoing all the progress they had made in their journey together. Ultimately, Jim's trust in Huck was shaken, showing the challenges and complexities of their friendship.

One of Miss Watson's household slaves. Jim is superstitious & occasionally sentimental, but he is also intelligent, practical, & ultimately more of an adult than anyone else in the novel. Jim's frequent acts of selflessness, his longing for his family, & his friendship with both Huck & Tom demonstrate to Huck that humanity has nothing to do with race. Because Jim is a black man & a runaway slave, he is at the mercy of almost all the other characters in the novel & forced into ridiculous & degrading situations.
