Many countries mummified people, but I will focus on Egypt. The Egyptians believed that people (and animals) had souls, known as Ba (shown as a bird) that was tied to the body. If the body were to be destroyed or decayed then the Ba would die. To make sure that that did not happen, they mummified the body. Mummifacation was not just for the Pharoahs, or the High Priests, but was available to everyone. Not just common townspeople, but animals and pets.
