Cherries are good for us in a lot of ways. They are low calorie, but are filled with nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

They contain anthocyanin glycosides; pigments that are especially concentrated in their skin and are known to have powerful anti-oxidant properties. Anthocyanins have been shown to act as anti-inflammatory agents and can potentially help chronic painful conditions like gout, Arthritis, fibromyalgia and sports injuries.

Cherries are also rich in melatonin, which can possibly help neurosis, insomnia and headaches.

Cherries are a good source of the minerals potassium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese.

Cherries, especially tart cherries, are rich in the anti-oxidants lutein, zeaxanthin and beta carotene, which protect the body from free radicals.

Studies suggest that tart cherries may help fight cancers, neurological diseases and pre-Diabetes.

A West Indian cherry called Acerola has exceptionally high levels of Vitamins C and A.
