Reusable instruments can be hand washed or in a automated washer. Then they need to be dried, possibly bags/wrapped and then sterilized properly.

Some items are one time use only and are just thrown away. If it's a reusable tool, such as most drill bits, scalers, elavators, etc, those are cleaned in an autoclave.
