Formula1 cars are aerodynamically deisgned in order to reduce drag when they are racing. Every component of a formula1 car plays an important role in maintaining handling and increasing speed for the car. Due to the competitive nature of the sport and the importance of every split second each component of the car is tested to see how it increases air friction when on track. It is the air friction that can slow down the car and loose anything from split seconds to a few seconds for a driver throughout a lap. The recent introduction of a new aerodynamics package for Ferrari, has demonstrated the impact that this technology can have on the cars performance.

The basic reason is to avert the loss due to wind resistance. Almost 60% fuel on an average is lost if we drive a non-streamlined car @ 80Kmph. Moreover, due to streamlining a better mileage at higher speed is achieved. Hence, economy increases.

Part of a race car driver's job is to avoid hitting solid objects, because that would slow the car down (to put it lightly). But hitting air also slows a car down. A streamlined car essentially hits less air, so it can go faster.

To easily cut through the air. But actually they have a lot of wings to create downforce. Go and find out what it is on Google or wikipedia. Quite interesting!
