Gamma radiation is the most ionising type of radiation, and has a high frequency because of it's short wavelength. It's uses include:

  • killing microorganisms and bacteria
  • killing mould and insects in/on food
  • sterilising hospital equipment (especially plastic equipment as it could be damaged in other sterilising methods e.g. - heat)
  • carrying out CT scans
  • radiation therapy
  • cancer treatment / curing

Gamma rays are high energy electromagnetic radiations.

They can be used to destroy living tissues by a process called irradiation. This property is made use of in sterilizing medical and surgical instruments, as a substitute for autoclave. Irradiation can also be used to destroy bacteria in foods and to prevent fruits and vegetables from sprouting.

Gamma radiation can be used to scan the inside of vehicles. In many of the ports worldwide, gamma radiation is used to scan containers to ensure the security of cargo.

Gamma radiation is also used in medical field for diagnosis of certain diseases and also for treatment of some types of cancer.
