The Giver contains all of the memories (good and bad) of the world before the one of Jonas'. He carries so much knowledge but that knowledge is his burden. For every memory he passes onto Jonas, he loses some knowledge so he also loses some of the burden he is carrying.

Givers' burdens are lessened in working with Jonas because he has the unique ability to receive and hold memories that others cannot bear. By transferring these memories to Jonas, givers can free themselves from the emotional weight and trauma associated with them, allowing them to focus on their role of guiding and advising the community. Additionally, working with Jonas provides givers with a sense of purpose and fulfillment in passing down their knowledge and experiences to the next generation.
