So, the first step is to design the electronic circuit. The second step is to break down the subsystems so that the entire circuit is expressed in terms of the basic components. The third step is to implements the basic components by layers of semi-conducting materials and by metal layers. The design is expressed in a series of masks which together define the geometries of the layers. This completes the design process. The design can then be fabricated by selective doping, etching etc using the masks.
