Who votes for the Academy Awards?

To vote for the Emmys, you must work (or have worked) in television and be part of the Television Academy. The Academy is comprised of around 25,000 members and is split into peer groups related to specific profession in the industry. It requires an application and yearly membership fees.

According to TheWeek.com, Oscar nominees are selected by members of the Academy's 15 branches, who vote in their own fields. In other words, directors pick the Best Director nominees, cinematographers select the Best Cinematography nominees, etc. Each voter selects five nominees in order of preference. All Academy members get to nominate films for Best Picture. The auditing firm of Price Waterhouse determines the results and issues the top five nominees in each category.

After the nominations are revealed, Academy members are then allowed to vote in each category on the final ballot.

The public does not get to vote for Grammy Award nominees. The Grammys are like the Oscars where again, the public never gets to vote. Only a prestigious panel of members do.
