The gastrointestinal systems purpose is to enable the extraction of absorbable nutrients from food during the digestive process, which

is both mechanical and chemical. It is as follows: * The Esophogus.....after chewing and then swallowing foods

*The stomach...........where pepcin & HCI are released/becomes

Chyme/enzymes & acids break down to almost

liquid mass

*The Duodenum........bile/pancreatic enzymes are released/

becomes liquid like syrup, nutrients some water

& drugs are absorbed/passes thru to blood & lymph

*Large Intestine........Absorbs bitamins/minerals/most water & becomes

mostly solid waste here

*Rectum......................Some water is absorbed/holds mass for removal

*Anus..........................Exit for fecal mass removal Hope this helps......Diane L. Vermillion

The small intestine absorbs most of the nutrients in your food, and your circulatory system passes them on to other parts of your body to store or use. Special cells help absorbed nutrients cross the intestinal lining into your bloodstream.
