If you mean how are the guns pioneers used similar to that of modern technology? Well, only the true basics in gun design, and even those have new forging processes with advanced polymer plastics and lightweight metals. The guns the pioneers were not even "Rifled" The process of rifling a barrel helps the accuracy of the projectile past around 50 meters. Guns before the Civil War, did not use cartridges or contain rifling. The process for loading a gun in the days before the cartridge was extremely difficult, unreliable, and made it look like a sword was a better choice in a parliamentary style fight, which disastrously continued in the civil war, even though they had the advances in weapons listed, making it such a tremendously bloody war. So deadly, that once artillery became mobile, rapid, and powerful, the only way to survive as front-line infantry was to go underground...Thats WWI until we developed the same reliability for motors and vehicles, and tanks...Thats WWII. Now if conventional armies were to fight, you would see tanks and teams with IFV's replace any means for front line infantry. So to answer your question though, The only basic parts on the gun even though are made differently now, are the Barrel, Trigger, Firing Mechanism (However it was set up), a stock or grip, and Hammer. Now we have crazy things like buffer Assembly's for controlling rates of fire, upper and lower receiver's. I guess most pioneers were during the Napoleonic era, so they might have had a bayonet lug as well. Hope that answers your question :D
