In the recent past, the time lapse between a release-to-theatres and a release-to-DVD has become shorter. This is because consumers are interested in seeing first-run films on their home entertainment systems soon after the films have been released to theatres.
On-Demand cable options have also shortened the time span. Once this option is available, it's wise for the distributor to also have a DVD option for the film.
Because distributors make more dollars on DVDs than they do at the box office, it's also interesting to them that the time lapse be short.
Some films are originally released on DVD. Otherwise, you may be able to buy a first-run film on DVD as soon as 60-90 days after it is first released to film houses.
The distributor determines the release date to DVD, generally based on demand or what they project the demand to be.
