The crust is the uppermost part of the earth. It is also the coolest and least dense. While the mantle is a warmer and dense. The mantle is made up of the Asthenosphere and the Lithosphere. The lithosphere floats in many plates on top of the taffy-like asthenosphere. The Lithosphere is made up of the upper part of the mantle and the crust.

The crust is just the outer layer (that we walk on). The mantle inclues the astenosphere, lithosphere, and upper mantle. The crust is also made of rock, while the mantle has liquid, molten, and solid material.

The crust is divided up into the continental and the oceanic. The latter is 5 km thick and is primarily composed of gabbro, basalt, and diabase. The former is 30-50 km thick and is primiarily composed of granite. It is less dense than the oceanic crust. As one goes further down into the Earth, you have an increase in iron and a decrease in silicon and aluminum. The mantle is approx. 2970 km thick and is divided into the upper and lower. It comprises 84 percent of the Earth's total volume.

The divide between the crust and the mantle is based on the composition of the rocks. The igneous rocks of the crust are of a mafic to felsic (low silica to high silica) composition, with oceanic crust dominated by basalt and contintental rock dominated by granitic rock. The mantle consists of ultramafic (very low silica) rock, with the upper portion consisting largely of a rock called peridodite.
