If you don't recycle plastic then it is thrown into a landfill. Once in the landfill it will be buried with other trash which pollute groundwater.

If it goes direct to the landfill, it gets dumped, buries, and sits there until it decomposes. If it goes to a transfer station, it'll be dumped, and later onto other trucks which will take it to the landfill.
