A hammer is an energy transfer system. It allows you to move mass (kinetic energy) towards an object with a view to moving it (nail) or breaking it (rocks etc.). Hammers can be designed as a hand tool, or in the case of hammers used in battles, a throwing weapon.
Wood handles, for work hammers are mostly made of hickory, ash or oak. Wooden handles for throwing hammers, hickory, ash or cane (rattan) are used, the latter being the most desirable. The Olympic throwing hammers uses steel wire, in these modern times Highland games throwing hammers, use PVC plastic conduit, as a handle, as it tends to be more durable then cane or wood.
The hammer can hammer nails in, it can pull those nails out, it can be used delicately to 'adjust' things that don't quite fit. Some hammers can fix dents in auto body work, other big hammers can pound stakes into the ground.
