Box turtles are endangered and illegal to have in many states. They are difficult for the average person to care for and are better left in the wild. If you came across one from a petstore then you need atleast a 55 gallon WIDE (not tall) tank. They need soil, a hiding place and a water area they can easily get into and out of to bathe.
Hello? I'm a turtle owner, and you could see by reading my name that I love turtles.
I'm taking care of a red belly turtle for a tiny bit over a year now, (I bought it on 2011 December 31st, the last day of 2011) and I will answer your question.
If you're going to take care of 1 or 2 baby box turtles, I will suggest using a 20gallon tank. My turtle is a little over 3 inches now, and he/she lives in a 20gallon tank, and it has a lot of space to swim and bask in.
As your turtle/turtles get bigger, you will have to change your tank to a bigger one.
Or, if you don't want to keep on buying new tanks, you can buy a very big tank at once, so that even if your turtle/turtles is/are over 4inches, it'll still have a lot of space in the tank to swim and bask in.
I hope you learned your answer here.
Bye!
(Oh, and I would suggest using a 100gallon tank or so, if you want to buy a very big tank all at once. It can fit like 5 turtles or more inside!)

The Box turtle Family is Emydidae
slightly larger than a full grown box turtle.

The Box turtle (or Box Tortoise) is a desert Tortoise and is the State reptile of California, they are about as big as an adult human's hand. As of How big they can get, I would say about as large as size 7 foot.
yes but they may try to mate if opposite genders
box turtles eggs can be the size of a finger nail.
No, different types of turtles can only mate with each other if they are both part of the same sub species. for instance yellow belly sliders and red eared sliders can mate. but a painted turtle and box turtle would not mate.
The only box turtles indigenous to Kansas are the Ornate box turtle and the Three toed box turtle. They both grow to an adult shell length of 6 inches. The biggest box turtles are Gulf Coast box turtles (not in Kansas) and they can grow to 8 inches or more in length. To answer your question, the state they are in has no affect on how big they grow so if you put a gulf coast box turtle in Kansas it can still grow to 8 inches or more.:-)
