The hole should be about 1 and 1/2 inches in diameter although an 1/8 of an inch or so smaller would not hurt as Starlings( an invasive species known to take over active Martin nests) are a little bigger around than Purple Martins.
But if you want to eliminate ever having to worry about Starlings messing with your Martin's nest. Cut out what looks like a half of a circle.

Although this does not stop them devilish sparrows, but it'll ease some of the pressure for your Martins.
