The average ground diameter was around 15 feet, but many were very much larger. The artist and explorer George Catlin obtained a Crow tipi that used 30 poles and stood at least 25 feet tall (see links below).

Some of the tribes living on the margins of the Great Plains, such as the Mandans and Hidatsas, used rather small tipis for hunting at certain times of the year.
