The best way to get out of a class is to convince those who require you to take it that you do not need it, and the best way to convince someone of something is to demonstrate that it is true (as well as cutting off funding from supporters of the opposite viewpoint, but that's not applicable in this case).

One major difference between math and most (or at least many) other subjects is that just about everything you learn in math is used as part of something you learn later. Therefore, if you fall behind on one topic, you risk remaining behind throughout the balance of your educational experience. It's important to seek help as soon as you realize you are falling behind in math, because if one chapter of your math book does not make sense now, it's almost a guarantee that other chapters will not make sense later unless you take care of the problem. So the first step is to recognize at what point you started to fall behind. A math tutor who has worked with many students will have developed an understanding of the sequence of topics in which math is best learned and of the ways in which each topic is related to the others, so an interview with a good tutor would make it easier to discover where the problem started. If a good tutor is not available, not affordable, or is not recognized as a higher priority than the other things that fill your personal schedule, you can skim through your textbook, which I certainly hope is arranged in a logical sequence, in search of the first thing that didn't make sense. Then starting there, do all of the problems at the end of each chapter. Math is not natural, but it is the best tool for understanding what is natural. Since it's not natural, the best way to understand it and thereby become comfortable with it is to develop a familiarity with it through repetition. Do a lot of problems in the areas in which you are struggling. If a mathematical concept doesn't make sense, go to different people to have it explained in different ways until you find the explanation that works for you. The way we interpret things is related to our experiences, and since each of us has a different collection of experiences, Explanation A might work better for one student while Explanation B is better for another. Comprehension might be related in some way to genetics as well. If that's true, a family member might be the best tutor for you.

Remember that being good at a subject involves not just knowing all the answers but also knowing how to find the answers when you don't know.

Can you skip sixth grade math?

When you think of math, think of building a house. In order to add a 7th floor you must build the 6th floor. Without those layers of support your building will need constant repair. You might be able to take 6 th grade math at an accelerated rate and start 7th grade curriculum sooner, it depends upon your understanding, hard work, and if your school can provide the teacher.
