when there is less food, there is less population and thus become a limiting factor or rather reaches carrying capacity of the ecosystem due to the lack of food to sustain the biotic potential in this case the population.

Nutrients are critical to biome. As the biome nutrients deplete, all living processes within the biome slow. As depletion progresses to zero, life processes proceed to zero. If the biome is closed (escape not possible), the biome, and all life within it will cease.

No nutrients = no biome = no life.
