Most paralegals get a certificate of course completion or diploma to attest to their qualifications. If and when you're hired as one, then the real test begins and it's when you have to put up or shut up.

This is an interesting question because most states do not regulate paralegals or legal secretaries. Therefore, there is no need to differentiate. If, for some reason, the court were to ask you to provide proof of your status as a paralegal, you would need to submit documentation of your combination of education and work experience. However, there are very few instances in which a paralegal would need to do this. In all states, paralegals must work under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Otherwise, they are guilty of practicing law without a license.

The answer to this question depends on the state you live in. In some states, certified paralegals do some of the same things as attorneys, but in other states, paralegals are essentially restricted to the role of a secretary. You should research the paralegal qualifications for your particular state before making a decision of which credential to pursue.
