What are the steps to make a potato light up a light bulb?

The electrolites that are in solution in the potato tissue, potassium, salt etc.
Bake it on a low heat until it's dried out. Trying to light a potatoe's like trying to light wet leaves....a lost cause unless you dry it first.

The "lemon and electrodes" battery, so favoured by badly researched textbooks, can *barely* be made to light a super-bright LED, so your chances of getting a potato to work must be about zero.

You cannot get a potato to power a light bulb. In order to get, say, a lemon to power a light bulb you need to use a metal like zinc as one electrode, and copper as the other. An electronic circuit is then set up, but the reason why it works with lemons is becuase they contain citric acid. Other citrus fruits such as Oranges or limes may work also (but not as well as they contain less citric acid). Potatoes do not contain any citric acid, so they won't work.

Cut a potato in half, then cut a slit into each half large enough to insert a penny. Wrap copper wire around each penny. Stick the pennies into the slits in the potato. Wrap a third copper wire around a zinc plated nail and stick into one of the potato halves. Wrap some of the wire around the penny around the nail in the potato. Wrap the wire around the second nail and stick it in the other potato half. Connect the two loose ends to an LED light. It should light up.
