Carbon dating is mainly used by archaeologists to date recent finds as the technique is only accurate for 50,000 to 60,000 years in the past. To date fossils, or rather the rocks in or near where the fossils are found, we use radioactive isotopes which have a much greater half life.

Carbon dating can be used for finding the age of organic matter. There are two main isotopes of carbon, 12C and the radioactive 14C which exist in nature in proportions that have been estimated. Living organisms absorb both forms of carbon during their life. However, when they die, they stop taking in any more carbon.

From that point onward, the 14C undergoes radioactive decay (half life = 5730 years) so that its share of the total carbon decreases. So, measuring the relative proportions of 12C and 14C in the remains of the organism allows its age to be determined.
