The 1992 local government finance act makes the provision for council tax to be paid over 10 or 12 months or even 52 weeks. The collecting councils, it seems agreed on 10 monthly payments. It may be paid by direct debit or by a payment book at the bank or post office(post office may charge). Those paying by direct debit are generally given a couple of payment dates. Those paying in other ways usually have just one date by which the council tax must be paid.

Most councils, provided that you contact them BEFORE your council tax falls into arrears will make arrangements for other ways of payment to suit both you and them. I have to stress that you must do this BEFORE you are in arrears. If you do fall into arrears, the council tax for the whole year may be collectable.
