They contain Shellac as major component to which fillers and plasticizers are added. Filllers like: Powdered Alumina and Mica which increases the strength. And Talc to improve the reproduction of fine detail of softened materials. Platicizers include sterin and stearic acid. Stearic acid melts on above 69 degree C because of which shellac baseplates should not be overheated. If heated beyond 100 degree C they will start to polymerize which is a condensation reaction and gases starts to come out it ( seen as bubbling reaction).
A clear enamel spray will just absorb into the cork. You might as well use the paint straight. Get a stain kill primer or a shellac based primer ant coat the cork prior to painting.

When George Washington was inaugurated for his first term as president in 1789, he had only one natural tooth remaining and was wearing his first full set of dentures made by John Greenwood. Previously he had had partial dentures which were held in place by hooking them around the remaining teeth. The Greenwood dentures had a base of hippopotamus ivory carved to fit the gums. The upper denture had ivory teeth and the lower plate consisted of eight human teeth fastened by gold pivots that screwed into the base. The set was secured in his mouth by spiral springs.http://www.americanrevolution.org/dental.html
