It essentially deprives them of oxygen which is needed for proper growth and development.

This happens because when you smoke, carbon monoxide is released into the bloodstream. Blood prefers to attach to carbon monoxide over oxygen, and a fetus's blood more-so... So when there is too much carbon monoxide in your system[and the babies], the body cannot get enough oxygen from the blood.

There is one thing I would say...... If you eat an apple and half goes to the baby that means if you smoke half of that goes to the babys lungs. more info..... When you smoke, your unborn baby smokes, too. On average, babies of women who smoke weigh less at birth than babies of nonsmokers. And if you smoke a lot during pregnancy-more than a pack a day-the baby's birth weight is likely to be even lower. This is not surprising, since the nicotine in cigarettes causes the baby's blood to be starved of the oxygen needed for healthy growth. Although the baby quickly gains back the lost weight, by age 7 a child of a mother who smoked during pregnancy is still more likely than other children to be shorter in height, slower at reading and lower in "social adjustment" than children of nonsmoking mothers.

(1) an un born child will be effected by smoking how?. well cigarets contain 200 posions like maraguna and tabaco. these may be tasty but their not with a unborn baby. when you have a unborn baby and you smoke then the baby has it in its blood stream. a baby needs a lot of food so whaen you eat or drink something the baby eats it also. like smoking your actually sharing a cigaret is shared with the baby. in fact the baby is being born it still gorwing so so when it takes in that cigaret then these side effects will happen; lung cancer heart deffects, kidney problems, brain damage and more. since the baby is growing the smoke has 200 posions so if contacted with the baby a cell in the body will be different it is mostly called skin cancer but this is no cancer since the baby is growning it will spread in the organs and the brain making the child defected of its control like walking talking and seeing also hearing. i advise no smoking when nursing an unborn child it will cause problems when they are born, they could be defected by an organ or body part.

(2) it can make them have small birth weight and could make their lungs weak

(3) On average, babies of women who smoke weigh less at birth than babies of nonsmokers. And if you smoke a lotduring pregnancy (more than a pack a day), the baby's birth weight is likely to be even lower. This is because the nicotine in cigarettes causes the baby's blood to be starved of the oxygen needed for healthy growth. Although the baby quickly gains back the lost weight, by age 7 a child of a mother who smoked during pregnancy is still more likely than other children to be shorter in height, slower at reading and lower in "social adjustment" than children of nonsmoking mothers. Statistics show that infant mortality (the death of the baby either at birth or through a miscarriage) is 50 percent higher when the mother smokes.. Children of smokers are also 2½ times more likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome, or crib death.

It has been suggested that smoking during pregnancy results in babies weighing less at birth, and in subsequently anti-social behavior.
