Best Answer

Because of the longer wave length of yellow light. Scattering of light from small particles (i.e. the sort you get in fog) is dependent on frequency. Higher frequencies are scattered more; longer wavelengths are scattered less. Putting a yellow filter on a white light eliminates the highly scattered blue and violet frequencies.

Why are fog lights yellow?

fog lights are not always yellow.... i have no answer to your ? but i can tell you as a mechanic that all fog lights are not yellow and do not need to be.... all a fog light is, is a light placed lower on your vehicle so the light is not reflected into your face when it is foggy.... look in your local laws but in California if it is foggy and your vehicle is equipped with DOT fog light you do not have to use your regular head lights in a foggy situation... you do however have to turn on your running lights

Why are infra-red raditions preferred over ordinary visible light for taking photo in fog?

The longer, stretched out waves of infra red light, unlike the short condensed waves of the visible spectrum, especially on the blue end, can more easily weave their way through the water droplets that form fog. The tighter waves of the visible spectrum present a larger front which collides with the tiny water droplets and are reflected away, so they do not penetrate. Therefore we cannot see through fog lit by "normal" light, whereas the long, stretched out infra red waves penetrate the fog more easily, enabling us to "see through" it
