A .prn file is about the most useless file type Microsoft have come up with. Windows programmes allow you to 'print to a file' but then give you no way of actually doing anything with the file. If your printer was a PostScript type, then it might be possible to convert the .prn file to a .pdf by renaming it as .ps instead of .prn and running it though a programme such as ghostscript.

Install a postscript printer, even if you don't have one. Many postscript printers have the notation PS in their name, so it makes it easy to identify them. Then, print your document, but select to print to file. Use a postscript to pdf conversion utility to convert the result to pdf. On linux, I use ps2pdf, but you can use this website:
http://www.ps2pdf.com/ or download Ghostscript.
Don't bother to print to PRN. Use ScanSoft PDF Create. You can load any file in any word processor, viewer, etc., that has a print function then choose ScanSoft PDF Create as the printer. It will then print to a perfect PDF.
