An elements reactivity is based on how many electrons are in the valence shell. All elements try to get 8 electrons in there valence shell except hydrogen which can only have two. An element reacts with other elements by gaining or giving an electron and that process of giving or gaining causes the reaction.

Elements on the far left are most reactive because they only have one electron.
