This question is a bit broad, as there are many factors that go into how you would tutor someone: how old the student is, what subject you are helping him/her with, where the student is and what the goals are of the student.
However there are a few main elements that are common to tutoring.
First, a tutor must form rapport, or connection with the student. We find this is the most important element of the success of the tutoring. If the student does not feel comfortable with the tutor, then it is much harder to make progress.
Second, the tutor must have knowledge of the subject that is being tutored, and have the skills to teach it. Strong communication skills, the ability to explain concepts and examples clearly, and a strong sense of what it takes to follow through are all important.
A tutor starts by determining where the student needs help in relation to the goals for the tutoring. So, if the student wants to do better in algebra class, for example, the tutor must find out what is wrong. One place to start would be to help the student with sample problems or homework problems to start to get a feel for how much the student knows. Learning gaps from the past may start to emerge. These learning gaps will help you put together a plan to get the student back on track.
