Before I begin, I must warn you that psychedelic mushrooms are illegal in the state of Alabama. While the spores themselves are not illegal, the consumption, growth and distribution of the mushrooms is illegal. The sale of spores is illegal if the intent is production and/or production for sale.

- The bell (or cap) of the mushroom can be anywhere from 1/4 to 4 inches in diameter and can vary in appearance. It can have a convex or a campanulate (bell) shape.
- The lamella (or gills) have an adnexed relation to the stem (attach tightly to the stem) and usually do not extend lower than the edge of the cap and will be grey-brown on the fringes and black in between.
- The stipe (or stems) are long and thick and will be coloured anywhere from off-white to brown or red. The base of the stem may be bluish.
- The spore print will be black
That is an example of a very brief form of identification. However, many species of mushrooms can fall under this description and several can be poisonous. In addition to this, toxic moulds can even grow on some "safe" species of mushrooms. Panaeolina foenisecci, Panaeolopsis nirimbii, Panaeolus papilionaceus are examples of mushroom species that look like Panaeolus cinctulus.
The police forces should also be adept at identifying the most commonly trafficked and naturally occurring psychedelic mushrooms in Alabama.
