This would depend on what sanitizer you are using: chlorine, bromine, salt generation, biguanide (Baquacil, Biogaurd), etc... However as with most systems, the best way to ensure accuracy is to have it professionally analyzed by a local dealer at least once a month. As far as home testing goes, drip tests are typically the most accurate way to test biguanide and chlorine pools, while strip tests are far more convenient and also cover more water balance criteria.

THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE A "SALT WATER POOL" DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SPECIAL TEST KIT. THE FACT IS THAT YOU HAVE A SALT SYSTEM ON THE POOL Plumbing THAT MAKES CHLORINE AND THAT THE SALT IS ADDED TO THE POOL HAS NO FACTOR IN THE EQUASION. Either way salt or standard pool ( AND IT IS NOT A SALT POOL - IT IS A SALT SYSTEM POOL THAT HAS A SALT GENERATOR INSTALLED IN THE PLUMBING) it is still a regular pool. Purchase a good test kit at the pool supply store not one of those cheap ones and learn how to use it and use it often. Keep it and it's chemicals out of the direct sunlight. Store the kit inside the house in a cool dry place. The kit only has a shelf life of about one season and the solutions even less. Solutions and test kits that are old will give you false readings.

You can get test kits from pool shops with the instructions attached, on the other hand if you take a sample of water in a clean bottle along, most pool shops will test it for you free of charge.

You must use test kit. The cheapest type is called a comparator. You take a sample of water and add 4 drops of the test solution then compare the color of the sample to a color scale.
