If it has a tendency to lose an electron (metals, e.g.) it will become a cation (positively charged). If it has a tendency to gain an electron (non metals, e.g.) it will become an anion (negatively charged).

See which electrode it moves towards. Anions move towards the anode, cations move towards the cathode.

Or you could cheat and look at the charge. Anions are negatively charged, cations are positively charged (which is why they move towards the electrode that they move toward).
