Atomic bombs create such a powerful explosion because it is started by an atom splitting open, releasing its energy and splitting other atoms, which split other atoms and so on and so on.
There are some labs that have a very complex machine that can split atoms and see what's inside.
Obviously, you can't do this at home, but it is possible to split an atom.
