Introduce baffles which inhibit the movement of air/water/whatever
If you are trying to reduce heat loss from anything it pays to look at the materials used which are insulating the object.
Black or dark colours have a greater heat intake and output rate, so generally all insulation should have white or light casing. The ideal insulation should be shiny/silver facing the heat, and dull/silver facing away from the heat. This is because a shiny silver surface will reflect heat and a dull silver will impede the rate of heat loss and will actually absorb ambient heat to help keep the object warm. Tin Foil is the best example of this.
Also use materials which don't conduct heat well, silicone, rubber, plastic, ceraboard. All metals conduct heat, some slower than others however. Steel doesn't conduct well when very thick, but tin and iron conduct very quickly.
I use this line of thought when insulating boilers.
Oil Fix It
To reduce Convection, you have to turn of a heat source. For example, If you are heating a glass beaker of water over a bunsen burner, you need to turn the Bunsen burner OFF because it is the heat-source.
You reduce thermal energy by cutting off the electicity that isn't being used at a particular time of the day and only use electricity when needed.
Heat transfer, like convection, cannot be stopped, although it can be PARTLY stopped. To stop convection you will have to trap air and stop it from moving somehow.
Use an insulative material like plastic or wood . If you have to use metal then place a 'thermal break' along the line of conduction by inserting a piece of plastic or wood.
a sponge can reduce conduction because its an isolent so it doesn't transfer energy well.
you can reduce convection by breaking it's flow
it reflects the heat back
convection conduction and radiation

CONVECTION

conduction by itself is slower to heat but conduction and convection is faster to heat
Convection has a cycle of what happens. Conduction dosent have a cycle
Conduction :)
Lack of a flow medium will inhibit conduction and convection.
