How do you tell a snapping turtle from a box turtle?

• they can not with draw their head into their shell

• there is a gap between the head and the top of the shell

Well itsvery simple. The snapping turtle will bite you, and the box turtle wont.Additionally, most of the snapping turtles I've seen in the wild are larger than box turtles, have longer and spinier tales than box turtles, have an angrier disposition and a MUCH louder hiss. Box turtles are usually small maybe 6 inches and bowl or helmet shaped where snappers are usually flatter and maybe a foot across. At least the ones I've run across.

There aren't many ways to tell the difference between a snapping turtle and a regular turtle. However the main difference is that the snapping turtle has a more distinct, and bigger beak. It looks more vicious and sharper than a regular turtles beak. Hope this is ok! From, Jane Goodall. :)

Snapping turtles snap because of it's nature. Snapping Turtles will snap at you because it is afraid or vividly hungry. Snapping Turtles also snap because it is their way of protecting themselves from their pray; therefore scaring of other animals that are trying to hunt it.
