First sign is they will scratch at their ears a lot, sometimes making them bleed. The inside of the ear will smell really bad, and if you use a q-tip to clean it out it will be black. I have Boxers and they get ear infections if not taken care of. Clean the ear out with q-tips and peroxide. Do this several times over the next few days and the infection will improve. If it does not improve in the next three days take your dog to the vet they may need antibiotics. If you take the time to clean your dogs ears out once a month or every other month it will keep this from happening.

When a dog has black matter in their ears, that can very likely be from a yeast infection, which also causes a bad smell.

When a dog has an ear infection, the most common symptom is the dog holding its head at an angle, a sure sign it has an earache. Peroxide will not treat the ear infection, and could even cause further damage to the ear, especially if the dog has a ruptured ear drum.

The best thing to do is to take your dog to the vet who will put the dog on antibiotics. And please, if you have leftover antibiotics at home, do NOT give them to your dog, because different antibiotics work on different types of infections, and also because those prescribed for humans aren't always safe for dogs, nor is the dosage the same.
