The age of a ferret may be determined by their teeth, they start to become translucent at the tip of the canines. As your ferret gets older, more of each tooth is translucent. But this may not always be true if the ferret was fed inappropriate food or was malnourished.

Age 1 - teeth should be solid, bright white

Age 2 and up - the tips of the canines will be slightly discolored and semi-translucent

Age 4 and up - the teeth will have more discoloration and translucency will be spread further up the tooth and appear more pronounced

Age 7 - the discoloration and translucency will be all the way to the gum line

Over 7 years - the canines should now be completely translucent

When a female ferret is in heat their vulva will become swollen and after mating, by looking at the size of the vulva, each day it will shrink a little. If her vulva is still swollen after four or five days, mating has not been successful and you need to introduce her to the male again. If the swelling goes down, it will be 42 days from mating, and close to due date you will be able to feel the babies. About two weeks before the due date she will start preparing a nest for birth.

A Jill ferret will have pregnancy symptoms in a false pregnancy as well, a veterinarian can check your ferret in about three weeks after mating to see if she has any fetuses or not.

A Jill in heat must be mated, because if she stays in prolonged heat it will cause serious illness leading to death

Advice from another contributor:

Like humans every pregnancy is different and with the ferrets it is the same, this is how we knew our little Gill ferret was pregnant, first of all her Vulva went down took just under a week after mating. Then we noticed she was more tired and she also started carrying my sons little teddy around and cleaning it, so this was her mothering instincts. Then we noticed her snatching food off us, like she'd never been fed. About three weeks after mating she started nibbling her nipples and the fir on her tummy has almost been nibbled off by herself. Her nipples are more pronounced also. Her tummy is much larger and heavier. This are the signs of pregnancy in our female ferret.

Turn you ferret on its back and look under its tail. A female ferret will have two openings (her vulva and anus), the boy will have one (his anus).

Next look at your ferrets belly. A male ferret will have a small bump on the lower part of his abdomen that looks a little bit like an outty bellybutton. It is in fact his penis. A female will have no bump in the middle of her stomach.

If you are still not sure you can check the litter box just after your ferret has done its business. If the pee and poop are in one pile then it is a girl (girls make one pile as their bits are close together). If the pee is slightly in front of the poop it is a boy (the boys pee will be slightly in front of the poop as his penis is further forward)
