Usually living creatures are easy to distinguish from nonliving ones. At other times it is difficult to tell which is which. Most people say, "When it moves..." or "When you hear something breathing..." but that will make it harder for you to think which is which.

Living things generally (1) are organized, (2) acquire materials and energy, (3) reproduce, (4) respond to stimuli, (5) are homostatic, (6) grow and develop, and (7) have the capacity to adapt to their environment.

It is impossible for something to be living and nonliving. To identify something to see if it is living or nonliving you can shake or nudge the creature to see if it's moving. If identifying a plant than water it, leave it to absorb all the water and than check it in the morning to see if it grew.
