First you will need to obtain you copy of Windows XP. Its ok if its not sp2 just as long as you are using a legal key. Windows XP has Automatic Updates that will download service pack 2 and even 3 for you.

Next you will need to check you bios' boot device order. To do this reboot the computer. When the first screen comes up it will usually say which button to hit to enter setup, normally F1 or Delete depending on your bios.

Once in the bios thumb through the options and look for boot device order. Change the first boot device to the CD ROM drive and the second boot device to the hard drive. Now is a good time to put your Windows XP CD into your CD drive. Hit F10 to save and exit or go back to the main menu and select save and exit. Your computer will reboot after saving your settings.

As your computer boots back up it will have a message saying press any key to boot from CD, do so and let it load the setup files. After the files are loaded you will be presented with a screen that lets you select which drive to install windows onto. The normal selection is the C: drive. Select the drive of your choice and hit enter. It will ask you if you would like to format the drive and if so in what method. (WARNING formatting your drive contents will erase all data saved on the hard drive such as anything under your documents, any programs installed or save on the PC, and anything else on the hard drive, only format if everything is properly backed up on another device.) I prefer to use the NTFS (quick) format option instead of the FAT. After formatting it will begin copying setup files. Afterwords the PC will reboot.

This time when the PC boots up and the press any key to boot from CD diolog pops up don't press anything. The XP setup will begin. During the setup you will be asked for your Windows XP Product Key. As mentioned above if it is a legal copy of Windows that you bought it should come with a key. The install can take up to an hour depending on the speed of the PC. The estimated time always starts at 39 minutes so it is quite inacurate. Just have patience and it will finish.

After installing Windows your PC will reboot. You can now take the Windows XP CD out of the CD drive. Windows XP will now boot up. Congrats. Hope this helps.

There are a couple ways to do this. One is to simply enable Windows Update. Windows Update will automatically download and install the latest updates, which would include the latest service pack. The other is to download the latest service pack manually from Microsoft's website.

Note that the latest service pack for Windows XP is now Service Pack 3, so you should download that instead for maximum security and bug fixes.

That depends on the type of "upgrade" you are referring to. Windows 98 can be upgraded to Windows 2000, Windows ME, or Windows XP by inserting the CD while Windows is running and running the setup program. Updates to Windows 98 can be downloaded via Windows Update, though no new updates have been or will be released since 2006.

I think you need to buy Windows 98. I do not think there is an upgrade available. I am also not even sure if it is possible to buy Win 98 anymore. It may no longer be available.
