  • Wash a full load (clothes or dishwasher) and pretreat or soak before hand so you can wash on cold,
  • Use the sun and the wind to dry your clothes. If that's not possible, don't dry clothes all the way, dry mostly and hang for the remainder of drying,
  • Get a more efficient washer/dryer/dishwasher/water-heater/heat pump/fridge.
  • Make certain all your windows and doors are sealed and use double or triple glazed windows.
  • Reduce your use of air-conditioning. Wear warmer or cooler clothes around the house.
  • If you use window A/C remove the units in the winter or cover them to prevent losing warmer air, also be sure that your chimney is closed off when not in use. Be sure to change your air filter every month.
  • Switch to lower wattage or more efficient lights,
  • Don't leave computers/TVs/stereos/lights or other energy users on when not using them. Stand-by, or vampire, energy can add 10% to your bill. If you love background noise get a radio. :)
  • Sweep hard floors instead of vacuuming and make a no shoes rule to cut down on vacuuming.
  • Keep your fridge well organised so you can see what's in there at first glance to cut down on time spent "rummaging,"
  • Cool foods before refrigerating (do not leave out for more than 2hrs after cooking and cover while out) and refrigerate in smaller containers.
  • If moving or building a home is an option consider a more energy efficient home, one that uses gas, solar or alternative energy source or check out the Monolithic Dome Institute for the safest, most efficient home you can build!
  • Each house will have different opportunities to optimize energy efficiency. In my home, a quick tip that helped a lot was to get insulated curtains to cover large window areas. The house is over 30 years old and needs to be upgraded with better windows, but in the mean time, a cheaper way to save on our heating bill has been to buy and put up insulated curtains.
  • Start by unplugging devices you don't use. Usually something like a TV with an "instant on" function will use energy 24/7. Turn off your computers and monitors at night.
  • If you have electric hot water, you can wrap your heater with a sweater avail from home supply stores.
  • You can take shorter showers.
  • You can wash clothes in warm instead of hot.
  • You can hand wash dishes instead of using a dishwasher.
  • If you have an electric dryer, don't over stuff it. Clothes dry faster when packed loosely.
  • Use energy efficient bulbs, and turn off lights when not needed, including that front porch light.
  • Double gazing can help save energy bills also cavity wall insulation.
  • You can reduce energy consumption by unplugging electronics when not in use, taking shorter and colder showers, reducing your home thermostat in the winter, and using less air conditioning in the summer.
  • By turning off devices you don't need (for example, turn off the lights when you are the last to leave a room)
  • By purchasing devices that are more energy-efficient (for example, energy-efficient light bulbs).
  • Reflective foil insulation products can reduce attic temperatures by up to 30 degrees when installed to the underside of roof rafters. Lowering attic temperatures provides a significant benefit by reducing air conditional loads and energy usage.
